“Being unique or special is no more a blessing” Tourette titleholder. Standing out, uniqueness, etc., are all words that are linked with positive feelings, but have you ever thought that this uniqueness might be the reason behind suffering and negativity? Throughout life, certain standards have been placed to define how a "normal" person should be or look like and if any person were to choose to exist beyond these standards he/she would be ostracized from society and labeled as a deviant, but what if it wasn't by their choice, What if someone couldn't change him/her self to this "normal" status and adopt the standards that come with it? This is the obstacle that Tourette syndrome fighters are faced with.
Tourette syndrome is basically a condition that hits the nervous system, causing Tics that are in the form of uncontrollable erratic movement or an unfamiliar sound. Another crucial part besides this condition is how we react to it, where people’s response to the behavior of Tourette syndrome’s patients who is not in favor of the “Normalized standards” is as critical as it, where any negative response wouldn’t just affect their emotional state, but would also impact their condition in a serious way causing it to deteriorate rapidly. All this puts tremendous pressure on the patients causing them to be distressed, feel insecure and in need of change, as a Tourette titleholder stated: "I have always tried to control my tics, because of how harsh people's reactions are, it always made me feel that I’m less than them and need to improve myself".
Feeling like a burden, getting dismissed from the society and many more are results of cruel responsive actions that Tourette heroes receive, showing how people just take the easiest path, instead of understanding and supporting them. The way of the future should be raising awareness towards such an issue, teaching people the right way to interact with Tourette Fighters with the aim of eradicating any negative sentiments towards these fellow humans, because, in the end, society thrives on the cooperation of different people from different walks of life. Always remember, no one chose to the Tourette life, indeed it chose them. It’s your turn, you choose your side.
